Well-written script that never gets swamped by the saccharine. It's a custody battle story of a motherless little girl math prodigy cared for by a dissolute uncle, played admirably by Captain America (Chris Evans). When confronted by the principal of the primary school requesting that his niece be transferred to a school for the gifted, Evans replies, "Separating our leaders from the rest of us, all you end up with is Congressmen." Or something to that effect. This movie has a number of pleasant surprises like that.
Very sweet movie about a young girl who is being raised by her Uncle. The girl is very gifted (math prodigy). The Uncle wants to raise the girl in a very normal, loving setting, which is what he believes his sister wanted. The grandmother appears and decides she must have the child, send her to elite schools, encourage/nuture her talents. The poor girl is rather caught between the two worlds--the case goes to court. Who really has the best interests of the child in mind? Gets a bit emotional, but the acting is great and makes you think of the truly gifted--should a ten year old be solely treated like some middle aged genius or can the kid still enjoy a childhood?
If you are looking for an entertaining and uplifting movie this it. Wholesome, delightful and touching. Loved it.
Simple, beautiful, heartbreaking, and wonderful.
The cast, acting, story (and especially the dialogue), are all just amazing.
I was absolutely blown away.
It has been years since I've seen a movie that stayed consistently good throughout.
It does not let you down.
And, as icing on the cake, the ending wraps up as neatly as you could have possibly prayed for.
How in the World has this movie gone so unnoticed?
A lovely little film that was largely ignored. That's a shame because this little film is a gem. Good story, fine acting (and the kid is outstanding), and beautifully photographed. Chris (Captain America) Evans can act just fine (and check out the deleted scenes for more). Spencer and Duncan are also on point. Great stuff all around. The only thing I needed more out of this movie was Fred the one-eyed cat. Enjoy. This is a family-friendly film but a bit of a tear-jerker from time to time due to the subject matter being more for a mature audience than for kids.
A VERY moving movie. Make sure to have some tissues handy. A must see movie, if only because it reflects an ordinary(to an outside observer) situation. A rather common situation, opens up to a tricky/emotional one. I enjoyed this film.
Good family movie. Enjoyable to watch. Movie with great sense of parenthood, with special gifted child and striving to get the best for that child. Worthwhile to take the time to see.
Nicely done, flashes of humour, believable characters, very enjoyable. Could easily watch another time or 2. The deleted scenes were good and would have fit well in the movie.
Well done by everyone involved. Good to see 'Cap' and his once real life girlfriend onscreen as book ends to the incredible story of the little girl genius. Worth the watch!
This film slowly reveals some of the backstory, but not so much that we truly understand the lifestyle of the adoptive parent. Evelyn on the other hand is portrayed as far too malevolent & sinister to be taken seriously. The interactions in the film generate emotional involvement with the outcome, but in another version of this film both "parents" would have been bled dry by the legal system; now that would be realistic.
Loved it! Unexpected in places, really well-acted by the leads. Beautiful song at the end. Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed this movie and how the story line unfolded. The relationship between the little girl and her uncle is very sweet, and shows an interesting non-traditional family and very much family there for each other.
I'm glad to see Chris Evans in a non-Marvel comic hero role for once. He was a convincing free wheeling uncle-guardian and what a great voice and presence. The little girl prodigy was sensational (a future teen star?) and the grandmother actress was scary and convincing. Octavia Spencer had such a small role but she did shine at the end of the movie with her one-liners. The only weak link was the elementary school teacher - I understand they wanted to cast an unsophisticated character but her voice was irritating and unconvincing.
Not a movie for children to watch but definitely a good flick to highlight the difficulties of child guardianship and what is best for a gifted child. Definitely should be on your short list of 2017 flicks.
A superb, heart-warming, unique movie! Great cast and beautiful acting! Some humorous and intense scenes in this well-produced drama! A fascinating story, set in a beautiful location! A whole family can enjoy this! Highly recommended!
Make sure to watch Extras!

A unique 2-3 star movie with an odd climax/theme. I think the little gifted girl was NOT made out to be very believable in having those gifted, mathematical genius powers to be? This girl did NOT somehow, fit the bill somehow as being an student extraordinaire. Anyhow, the overall theme was different or unique in the 'Tug-a-war', between the 2 legal custodians and the foster family coming in towards the end. I won't watch this again - pass. Ho-Hum. ??????
Excellent acting, great story-line. Emotionally and intellectually engaging. We will probably watch it again in a few years.
I thought this was a very good movie. I don't usually watch family type movies but this one was very good. I would definitely recommend this movie to others who enjoy movies like this.
Characters you could connect with and either root for them or not wish them well.
This is my final contribution to my 2017 viewing and it is good to go out on a 'high'. The acting was 1st class; the storyline interesting and emotionally charged (Kleenex tissues on 'stand-by') and it was certainly a winning formula - how do you keep a 7 1/2 year old mathematically gifted girl both grounded and integrated into a Society that seems obsessed with isolating her and her prodigious talent for the questionable greater good?
I really enjoyed this movie. The acting was good and the story line was interesting. The little girl was impressive and Chris Evans was better than i would have expected. The pace of the movie was pretty good too and it didn't bog down in the middle like some movies do. A few teary moments and some happy ones too. I recommend it!
