Events › Clout City: The Rise and Fall of Chicago's Political Machine

Join Dr. Dominic Pacyga for this fantastic lecture! This illustrated lecture will deal with the religious, ethnic, and cultural roots of the city’s political machine dating back to the 1870s. The machine grew out of Hardscrabble neighborhoods such as Bridgeport and the Near West Side to dominate the city’s politics. It thrived among the communal Jewish and Catholic neighborhoods that gave it birth. The machine went into decline in the late 1960s a result of cultural, demographic, and economic factors, but its influence is still felt across the city.
