June Jordan and the Protest Poem led by Musu Bangura

4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
South Shore

Description

June Jordan believed in the concept of “Poetry for the People” and demonstrated this through her staunch dedication to protest poetry. In this course, we’ll spend time with political poetry and examine its artistic purpose. What can be achieved through the protest poem that differs from other poetic forms? How might one’s identity shape their relationship to political poetry? Participants should walk away with a clearer understanding of how to incorporate personal politics into poetry.

Musu Bangura is a poet and educator, originally from Washington DC but residing in Chicago for ten years. During their time in Chicago, Musu has worked for 826CHI and Chicago Poetry Center as a teaching artist and has been published in New Delta Review, Apogee Journal, BITCH Magazine, and more. They are currently the Eros Fellow at House of the Lorde. Musu believes in education for young people and dedicates much of their time to teaching youth the importance of artistic expression.
