Fiber and textiles have been used in art since ancient times. But craft or decorative art disciplines, including weaving, embroidery, and knitting, were separated from fine arts disciplines like painting and sculpture and associated with female domestic labor. Artists like Faith Ringgold, Sheila Hicks, Claire Zeisler and Miriam Schapiro have incorporated these materials into their work to collapse the space between craftwork and artwork.
Explore fiber art for yourself by creating a woven bookmark with yarn. This grab and go kit is available at the 8th floor reference desk during library hours for the month of March or while supplies last.
