Harold's Legacy Continues: The Power in Voting!

Presented in partnership with the Mayor Harold Washington Legacy Committee, join us for an inspiring program honoring Harold Washington’s enduring impact. The event begins with a thought-provoking conversation featuring Dick Simpson and historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas, moderated by Devorah Crable of Know Your Power. Together, they’ll explore the significance of civic engagement and the power of voting in shaping our communities. 

Following the discussion, enjoy a screening of the acclaimed documentary Punch 9 for Harold Washington, which chronicles the historic election and legacy of Chicago’s first Black mayor.

Shermann "Dilla" Thomas is a Chicago historian, cultural worker, and public employee who has
gained recognition as a social media influencer, particularly on TikTok, for his engaging short
videos about Chicago history. A lifelong resident of Chicago's South Side, he has been
recognized with awards such as the 2022 Tourism Ambassador of the Year by Choose Chicago
and the Chicago Public Library Foundation's 21st Century Award. He also co-founded the
Chicago Mahogany Foundation, dedicated to preserving and sharing the city's history and
culture.


Renowned author Dick Simpson is a political scientist, reform advocate, and former Chicago alderman who has combined a distinguished 55-year academic career at the University of Illinois at Chicago with public service. He authored numerous books on politics and civic engagement, produced award-winning documentaries, and led research that shaped government reforms. As 44th Ward alderman (1971–1979), Simpson championed progressive legislation and later advised multiple Chicago mayors on ethics and citizen participation. A nationally recognized educator and civic leader, he continues to influence public policy and democratic engagement.


Devorah Crable is an award-winning journalist and filmmaker committed to amplifying Black voices and culture. She has produced acclaimed documentaries, taught filmmaking, and launched civic engagement initiative Know Your Power. A former radio and TV host, Crable has earned numerous honors for her contributions to media and community leadership.

How to Attend:
Doors to the Auditorium open at 5:00 p.m., and seating is first come, first served. The discussion will begin at 5:15 p.m., the film screening will begin at 6:00 p.m.
