Join us for a discussion of Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano.
William Waters had a broken childhood, neglected by his family, but his salvation turned out to be basketball. While playing for Northwestern University in Evanston in the late 1970s, he meets the indomitable Julia Padavano, who falls for him and immediately sets out planning their futures. Julia and her family are kind of a package deal, and quicker than he could have imagined it, William is made a honorary member of her Italian American family who live in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. (Chicago Public Library's Lozano Branch features significantly in the plot.) The forceful Julia and her three younger sisters love the novel Little Women but they are also reminiscent of the sisters in Pride and Prejudice. When you're young, the future can seem wide open, but fate has a way of upturning that orderly apple cart.
