Prominent gastroenterologist Leonidas H. Berry joined the staff at Michael Reese Hospital in 1946 and became the first black physician on staff. In the 1960s, Berry along with more than two dozen other Chicago medical professionals organized the Flying Black Medics, which consisted of nurses, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, paramedics and biochemists from Chicago.
This program is a family friendly program designed to learn about the life and work of Dr. Leonidas Berry. As an introduction to his collection and his impact in Chicago, participants will be putting together a model plane like the ones used by the Flying Black Medics of which he was a founding organizer.
