Silkworms POC Book Club: When We Were Sisters

6:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Daley, Richard J.-Bridgeport

Description

Please join Silkworms POC Book club for a discussion of When We Were Sisters by Fatima Asgar.

In her debut novel, Asghar explores the intense bond and intimate lives shared by a group of three siblings who are tragically orphaned after their parents' deaths. Each sister must struggle to hold on to what they have left of family as they come of age and navigate their own lives, their heavy grief, identities, and desires. Kausar, the youngest of the three, grapples with her own understanding of gender and the expectations of Muslim girls in America. Asgar writes poetically the story of the three siblings as they grow up. It is heartbreaking and touching and a testament to the complicated love in family relationships strained during childhood.

As part of the discussion, attendees will also abstract their favorite passages from the novel to cut up and paste together in an effort to create poems.

Copies available for pickup at Richard J Daley Bridgeport Library.
