How Pretrial Fairness Makes Us Safer: Busting Myths about the SAFE-T Act

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Description

Illinoisans are being targeted by a vicious misinformation campaign against the Pretrial Fairness Act, the part of the SAFE-T Act that will end money bonds in January. Fear-mongering fake newspapers and viral posts describing a supposed "purge law" scare communities into believing that the money bond system keeps us safe. The current system makes our communities LESS safe by exposing disproportionately Black and Brown low-income people to the dangers of detention just because they cannot pay a ransom for their freedom.

Join the Chicago Community Bond Fund and the Chicago Public Library to learn how the Pretrial Fairness Act keeps us safer and why pretrial release decisions should be based on facts, not finances.
