The Literature & Language Book Club will discuss The Mothers by Brit Bennett. Nadia is a gifted senior in high school, bound for a big university, who gets pregnant and decides to have an abortion. With a nuanced touch, the story explores the impact of this decision on her, on the college football star she was dating, and on the best friend she hesitates to confide in. It also features her community's older church ladies as a kind of Greek chorus of mothers who weigh in with their perspective in each chapter. This is a book haunted by absent mothers and flawed mothers, featuring mothers-who-might-have-been, mothers-to-be and mothers who were. One of the season's highlights.
