Bringing the Inside Out is an interactive poetry reading, hosted by Cean Gamalinda, focused on generating discussion between panelists and audience participants through mutual engagement with poetry written by incarcerated artists.
After a brief introduction, volunteers from the audience will be asked to read the poems, which will be shared electronically. The volunteers and panelists (local poets and others) will then be asked to share their ideas about what resonated (or didn't) from the readings to begin a conversation about the conditions, feelings, and futures at stake in the work.
Cean Gamalinda is a Chicago poet and teaching assistant working with the Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project to coordinate classes, workshops, and a policy think tank with incarcerated students at Stateville Maximum Security Prison. He has co-facilitated and performed work at venues such as the Poetry Foundation, the Jazz Showcase, and the Red Rover Reading Series.
