Tattoos & Tribes

5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Description

For millennia tattooing has served as a unique art form with many intimate and social purposes across the world. But why do we tattoo, scar, or ink our skin? In this workshop series we will engage global tattoo traditions and histories spanning from ancient civilizations to present day meanings of tribal tattooing, and more.

From tattoo folk art influences in the contemporary art world to cultural significances and stereotypes about prison and gang culture tattoos, we will explore our preconceptions about tattoo art and use these comparisons to talk about our own identities, body image, and colonial legacies leading to modern day misconceptions about race.

Throughout this monthly workshop series we will delve into tattoo techniques, styles, and symbols as we craft, sketch, and draw our own tattoo designs.

This is the first program for Tattoos & Tribes, a virtual series by Jose Luis Benavides, YOUmedia teen associate at Back of the Yards Branch.
