In a universe like and unlike our own, Lyra Belaqua and Pantalaimon, her shapeshifting daemon, must make their way into the mysterious North to rescue her friend Roger, abducted by the "gobblers," child stealers who will stop at nothing in their quest for metaphysical perfection. What is the fate of the stolen children and how does it relate to Lyra's mysterious uncle?
