Although it takes half the book to find out what actually happened at the barbecue, Moriarty keeps the reader’s attention and sets the stage for the second half of the book. The last few chapters really do a good job of tying up loose ends. The story also digs deep into several issues : hoarding, parental neglect and guilt to name a few. Very entertaining.Although it takes half the book to find out what actually happened at the barbecue, Moriarty keeps the reader’s attention and sets the stage for the second half of the book. I enjoyed this book. All of the characters are real people Jacqueline Kennedy met and befriended during her study year in Paris and while the author tried as much as possible to describe real events, the book is a book of fiction. The author succeeded in capturing life in post World War II France and the life of students at that time. The one annoying aspect is the constant reference to the heavy smoking these individuals engaged in.I enjoyed this book. I stumbled upon this book by accident but decided to read it. Winston Churchill was a larger-than-life politician and statesman and so it was interesting to discover how his three girls' lives were impacted by being his daughters. Very interesting.

Although it takes a little while to follow the characters and the storyline (the author goes back and forth between 1939 and 1945,and present day), this is a beautiful story. The plot is based on the true story of an invented Syndrome K virus which hospital workers "invented" to keep the SS away, thus saving the lives of many Jews in Italy. Reads quickly. A well-researched book. Kristin Harmel has done it again with a story filled with the horrors of WWII, love, resilience and survival. Best friends Elise and Juliette are separated during the war and reunited 20 years later, no longer friends. This book has an amazing twist. I found this book written in an interesting style and structure. This was quite the story. Picoult did a lot of research on elephants and the reader learns a lot, both about these animals in the wild and those in sanctuaries. Jenna’s search of her mother, who she feels abandoned her, brings together a few interesting characters. The book also delves into the paranormal and psychics, which renders the plot somewhat complicated at times. The ending is totally unexpected. Not your typical Picoult novel. This was quite the story. Because I love books, I love novels about books, bookstores and libraries. Maggie Banks, who takes over her friend’s maternity leave at a local bookstore which only carries classics, starts organizing « underground » book readings and selling books from her « secret stash » to improve revenues. She does all of this while going against part owner Ralph Bell and endearing herself to several of the town’s inhabitants. She also charms grumpy Vernon and straight-laced Malcolm. A delight to read.Because I love books, I love novels about books, bookstores and libraries. This is a good follow up book to The Monuments Men, but it focuses on the work done by American WACs. It also shows the other side of the story by alternating between Eva Bruner, a photographer hired to record all of the artwork which the Germans take and Josie Evans, a young American typist who helps produce lists of these pieces of artwork, some stolen, some still in their place in Florence. Author Laura Morelli, a PhD. in art history backs her story with very intense and accurate research. This is a good follow up book to The Monuments Men, but it focuses on the work done by American WACs. I have read several books about the holocaust and I have to say this is the most descriptive, graphic and troubling. Sage Singer, a young baker, develops a friendship with 95 year-old Josef Weber, a former SS who worked in Auschwitz who asks for her forgiveness and to help him die. As is typical of Picoult, the story focuses on moral issues. Although close to 500 pages, it reads fairly quickly.I have read several books about the holocaust and I have to say this is the most descriptive, graphic and troubling. We chose this book following a story on CBS’s Sunday morning which highlighted the friendship between author David von Drehle and Charlie White, a man who lived to be 109 years old. Dr. Charlie White, who was born in Kansas City in 1906, became friends with Drehle when he was 102 years old. During their 7 year friendship, he revealed many of his life experiences and Drehle set out to find the secret to such longevity. The book is not particularly well written — it reads more like a magazine article — and lacks a bit of the philosophical side of Charlie’s life. This is possibly because Charlie did not live life with too much introspection. Nonetheless, it is interesting to read especially since very few of us will meet people that age nor live to be that age.We chose this book following a story on CBS’s Sunday morning which highlighted the friendship between author David von Drehle and Charlie White, a man who lived to be 109 years old. This book starts off slowly, I suppose, for the author to set the scene for what comes next.
