Fools by Joan Silber is a wonderful surprise. Short stories loosely intertwine to give the reader a depth of experience in reading not just an individual story but the book as a whole. Themes include personal growth (and facing one's own demons), living life on life's terms, anarchy, spirituality, parenthood, and opening to the unknown. Highly recommended for those who enjoy clear writing and complex characters who discover the sacredness of the ordinary.

The six finely-crafted stories about anarchists explore our better natures and our worst. New York Marxists in the 1920s, conscientious objectors imprisoned during WWII, the Occupy Wall Street movement -- I love the way they are all loosely interconnected, with characters and places from one story popping up tangentially in another.
