Beware a Dashing Man

England, 1961, is in a full post-colonial hangover. Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is sixteen and full of dreams of Paris and the wider world. She gets them for a brief time by becoming the girlfriend of an older man, David (Peter Sarsgaard). David is dashing, glamorous, good looking, and rich. How he gets his money is a bit unscrupulous, but Jenny is willing to accept it as the price for the posh… (more)

I thought I was going to absolutely hate this movie from some of the descriptions here, but nothing could be further from the truth.

On top of being flat-out intelligent and well-written, this film is VERY subtle and nuanced, which is why it was so, so good.

This is absolutely NOT a porn flick by any stretch of the imagination--you really end up sympathizing tremendously with both the lead characters (Brandon and his sister), and why they do what they do. Brandon's desperation to his addiction is apparent from the start.

If you are the type of person who needs your movies simple, linear or explained to you, you won't like this film. But if you enjoy understatement and "showing and feeling" rather than telling, talking and explanation, you'll really, really like this one. McQueen did a helluva job here.

A very pleasant surprise--I don't watch many movies, but I'm glad I checked this one out. If you have any doubts, check out the Amazon reviews ( or the Wikipedia entry for the film (

This is a 2011 British film co-written and directed by Steve McQueen, starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan.
The film's explicit sexual scenes are like an adult movie.
Altough the director might have been trying to depict the traumatic experiences of the brother and his younger wayward sister, the film seems to be a total flop because it doesn't show any meaningful and understandable scenes.
The director doesn't seem to know how to make a movie.
What a shame! :-)
It was a complete waste of my time.

A sad and depressing commentary on our sex-obsessed culture pushed to its logical extreme. I found it hard to watch such a display of relentless self-destruction. Good acting, intelligent script. A movie about sex which is completely lacking in eroticism.

Michael Fassbender is a martyr to his sexual urges for 101 minutes of your time. There is a germ of something important here, but nothing develops. You will know all there is to know about the characters in the first quarter hour.

I had no idea about the topic of this movie when I grabbed it off of the shelf. I also didn't realize it was NC-17 when I borrowed it, but that didn't take long to figure.

It's a sad, and well produced movie about sex addiction. Implied cycle of depression due to sexual abuse.

Big budget, beautiful cinematography, but may be too edgy and graphic for many.

A stark yet glossy look at the emptiness and frustrations of sex addiction.

A very well told story about sex addiction. The conflicts between siblings and an independent life in a modern city are very realistically portrayed.

I can't imagine any other director telling this presumably boring addiction in any more dynamic way.

Well done, Steve McQueen the director.

Currently the ABSOLUTE BEST movie i have seen all year. Hands down. It's NC17 with very good reason. Yes the scenes are graphic but moreso the content, the real meat of the plot I believe would be lost on anyone so young. The .. EVERYTHING is perfect. It is full of nothing but pain so if you think you're gonna get your jollies by watching it... you are overwhelmingly mistaken.

I didn't think sex could be this borrrring! If it weren't for the cinematography and soundtrack, I'd give it a minus 5.

Don't waste your time with this one, it's not worth it. It's just a pointless jumbled mess.
