In 1959, Truman Capote was a popular writer for The New Yorker. He learns about the horrific and senseless murder of a family of four in Halcomb, Kansas. Inspired by the story, Capote and his partner, Harper Lee, travel to the town to do research for an article. However, as Capote digs deeper into the story, he is inspired to expand the project into what would be his greatest work, "In Cold Blood." He arranges extensive interviews with the prisoners, especially with Perry Smith. However, his feelings of compassion for Perry conflicts with his need for closure for his book which only an execution can provide. That conflict and the mixed motives for both interviewer and subject make for a troubling experience that would produce an literary account that would redefine modern non-fiction.

Excellent movie. I can see why Seymour won best actor. I'll probably read the book now. Ann Rule is a great true crime writer so it should be interesting what I think of the book In Cold Blood.

It's a solid film but you're watching it for Hoffman's performance. The transformation is amazing and is a sad reminder of what we're never going to see on film again.

Philip Seymour Hoffman gives a standout performance, but I can't call this a great movie. It is an interesting portrayal of self-indulgence and voyeurism. Like Hoffman, I remember Capote from the talk show circuit as a wonderful raconteur, high-pitched and flamboyant.

There is a very good reason as to why Philip Seympur-Hoffman is one of my all time favorite actors. Before this I only knew him as the character Dusty from Jon de Bont's Twister. To see a performance like this succed such a horrible performance in Twister, shows me more and more the versatile nature of character actors, and only proves more why I love them so much. Hoffman's greatest picture by far.

Enjoyed this movie. Was surprised because I thought it would be more about Capote's entire life BUT was in fact about the most significant part of his life. Philip Seymour Hoffman was great as was Mary Keener. Dan Futterman, who I have always liked as an actor did an excellent job on his first job as a screenwriter.
I knew primarily of Capote because of tabloids but did not realize how sad his life became as a result of In Cold Blood.

Amazing! This movie is a gripping tale about the research and writing done by Truman Capote for his acclaimed book, "In Cold Blood". This is an artistic movie with talented actors about the traumatic events that motivated Capote, who was a talented and perceptive man, to write the masterpiece of his career. The movie also explores the metamorphosis that was wrought within Capote during the five years that it took for all the events to unfold. The actors and director have been faithful to the complexity of both the characters and the story, which means that I will need to watch this movie many times before I will have absorbed all that it presents to me.

Surprisingly I didn't think I would like Philip-Seymour Hoffman's Capote more than Tobey Jones'. I was so very wrong. Hoffman plays a deeper, more soulful, and emotional portrayal and it's utterly convincing. He says more with his eyes than Jone's did with his whole performance, no exaggeration. by far the more superior performance and thus a more superior film.

I watched this because I knew vaguely about Capote and because Hoffman's performance was so highly rated. I was delighted to see the hype was justified, Hoffman is marvelous so too is Catherine Keener. The pacing is rather slow which enhances the frustration Capote has as the appeals drag on for years. Capote doesn't come off half as likeable in this version as he does in Infamous.
