Horror and Music at the Oscars

When I sat down to enjoy Sweeney Todd again the weekend before the Oscars, I was under the impression that it had won in 2007 for Best Picture. I was wrong: that honor went to No Country for Old Men, another film with a high creep score. Of course, for pure spine tingling, it's hard to beat The Silence of the Lambs, the Best Picture Oscar winner for 1991. Sweeney Todd did win a much-deserved … (more)

Let's face it - The Silence Of The Lambs was, indeed, a perfect example of an average-to-mediocre horror story being praised to the high heavens..... And, for what!?

Like, c'mon - There really wasn't any sound reason to justify all of the preposterous acclaim that The Silence Of The Lambs has managed to garner for itself.

With the butch-voiced Jodie Foster, as FBI trainee, Clarice Starling (a dreary feminist with an inferiority complex) aside - It was Anthony Hopkins and his "oh-so" refined and dignified cannibal character who just about totally ruined this film for me. He really did.

Hopkins' little "see-all/know-all" (borderline clairvoyant) Hannibal Lecter, with eyes set wide enough to make even Marty Feldman blink, was an absolute joke as far as a movie-psycho goes.

Like, why the heck did Lecter take a bite out of someone while they were still alive? Eh? Why?

As I understand it - Even "uncivilized" cannibals cook 'em before they eat 'em, right? But, of course, here it was all geared for horrific effect. And, like, who gives a bloody-damn about doing a reality check in this movie once in a while?

Sheesh! Like - Give me a break with this movie, already!

Enough said.

If you don't like Anthony Hopkins you will be critical of his performance, but you have to admit he's a great actor and Jodie Foster was right there with him.
This movie portrayed what many agents go through trying to catch a serial killer and how detailed they can be with their victims and hunt.
On the other hand a serial killer goes to great lengths just to continue his prowl.
If you like psychological and suspense this is for you.

Excellent! One of the best films to date, and no matter what year, Hopkins and Levine will chill you to the bone with their sadistic and disturbing portrayals of the most unnerving and scariest criminals of horror fiction. And Jodie Foster makes you hold on every second with her brilliant acting of Clarice Starling. AA++++++++++ all the way. One of the best films ever.

Finally got around to watching this, and thoroughly enjoyed it (despite my usual avoidance of horror films). Something in Hannibal's voice and the way he said Clarice's name is what made the character for me-- as well as the frequency with which he repeated her name, as if enforcing control over her.

Though, I don't know if it was an issue with the disc or my DVD player, but unfortunately the movie skipped for several minutes at two parts; once near the beginning, and again at the climax. Disappointing, but not ruinously so.

Best Hannibal Lector film, but what's more, one of the most fantastic suspense/horror thrillers packed with fantastic performances. Creepy to the core with an obvious villain, an obvious heroine, and .... then there's Hannibal. By no means a good person, but interestingly apt and willing to assist in bite-size portions, in just the right scenarios. Intriguing and worthy of its Best Picture win. Highly recommended.

Pretty much a perfect serial killer/crime drama. If you haven't seen this and like the genre, you will love it. Great acting and story. Graphically violent and gorey. This movie deserved all of it's accolades. Anthony Hopkins as Lecter has become a pop culture icon for the ages.
