I didn't realize this was a young readers book. I am glad that I read it though. It is a very easy read and if I had a teen I would encourage them to read it. It is a very gentle introduction to ideas like 1984, Logan's Run or other man made "controlled, paradise" concepts, but with a bit of mysticism or magic added by the ability of a very rare few that are selected to "remember" the past and pass it on to their successor.I didn't realize this was a young readers book. I almost put this book down, the first few chapters didn't grab me. It seemed like an Alice in Wonderland want to be, but very unfocused and random. But after a few chapters it finally hooked me. The narrator has a very limited selection of voices but those she has are very well done. Except for the "bad"sister who has an awesome white trash twang all her characters have a very wise selfless love style of talking. It makes me want to jump into the story and make them all my friends. What makes this book so good I believe is the serious flaws the main character has. A warning to the readers, the book is very adult in tone at times dealing with child abuse and violence. The main character and her sister deal with a serious bag of **it dealt to them as children as make their choices in their adult lives.I almost put this book down, the first few chapters didn't grab me. Very well narrated and a fun book. There is not a lot of depth to the characters but they are easy to like. The main character has no flaws which makes her less interesting and realistic. A good book if you are looking for an easy book to listen to with a strong female lead.Very well narrated and a fun book. There is not a lot of depth to the characters but they are easy to like. Unbelievable! This will make you feel ashamed for whining over having to walk the dog in the rain. Honestly I just don't know what I could write that would summarize how amazing this man's will to survive was. This is a must read if you enjoy survival stories.Unbelievable! Krakauer put a lot of time into researching this book. It is an interesting read but not as gripping as a solo survival story. It shares an important event which effected so many lives, both those who survived and the families of those who didn't. I felt that with all the characters involved though you couldn't loose yourself in it as you can with other survival stories such as Touching The Void or Adrift. I would give it a 5 for the research and the recreation of such a complex event. But I gave it a lower rating for how much I was able to loose myself in it.Krakauer put a lot of time into researching this book. It will make you a believer in the courage and drive of man's need for scientific knowledge.
In 1947 biologist Thor Heyerdahl and 5 other men built a balsa log raft and sailed 4,300 nautical miles using the deep ocean currents from Peru to the Polynesian islands in an attempt to prove a theory that South American peoples populated the islands in this way. Three months at sea battling storms, sharks and at the mercy of nature they survive. It will make you a believer in the courage and drive of man's need for scientific knowledge.

The wonderful character development that was in The Sparrow is missing in this second book. I also found the similarity of every major character irritating. She has three different sapient spices but they all sound like they have the exact same voice. And lastly our original survivor from the first voyage drifts into the background and even when he finally returns to the planet his role in the book felt flat. I feel she tried to focus to much on a dozen characters and lost some interest along the way. All that said she still was able to write with an original feel and I did enjoy this book. It just wasn't up to the same high quality the first book gave. The wonderful character development that was in The Sparrow is missing in this second book. This is a very easy and beautiful book to read. The main character is a young girl who through the influence of her mother becomes a strong person with well defined morals and sense of self. As many of the authors characters this one is unconventional but easy to love. Dark and depressing. I kept waiting for this to pull out of the spin but it's whole story seems to be based on withered dreams. The main character is hard to like or enjoy also. One moment she might be very philosophical the next she'll act like an angry child.Dark and depressing.
